Jed Ward
Founder and editor of Vital4Living. Former ski-equipment buyer and 25+ year professional river guide.
The outdoor-gear internet is crowded with "10 best" listicles assembled from product feeds. Vital4Living exists because there's a better way: tools that compute your fit, size, and setup — built by someone who has bought and sold this gear professionally.
Where the expertise comes from
- Ski-equipment buyer. Bought skis, boots, and bindings for a niche local ski shop — sizing, fit, last widths, flex, and binding compatibility, daily.
- Professional river guide, 25+ years. Second-generation guide; owned and ran a rafting tour business for a decade.
- Ski-area operations. Worked sales, guest services, and operations at a ski area.
- Backcountry and alpine. Backpacking, hiking, and canyoneering across Colorado and Utah; alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, mountain and road biking, fishing, hunting, off-roading, photography, and drones.
Editorial policy
- Tools compute; they don't list. Every spec-engine performs a calculation — length, fit, compatibility, volume — rather than ranking products by opinion.
- Sourced specs, never invented. Product specifications come from manufacturers and retailers. Where a spec is estimated, it is labeled.
- Experience is labeled. Gear Jed has actually handled is distinguished from spec-only comparisons and buyer-analysis.
- "Last reviewed" dates appear on every guide so you know if it's current.
- Safety first. Binding release settings (DIN), backcountry/avalanche, and similar content is educational and decision-supportive only — it never replaces certified professionals or formal training.
