What boot sole length is
Boot sole length (BSL) is the distance from the front of the toe lug to the rear of the heel lug, measured in millimeters. It is the number your binding is adjusted to — not your mondo size, and not your street-shoe size (Jans).
BSL is stamped on the boot itself, typically as raised markings on the heel lug, the side of the sole, or the midpoint of the sole. A boot may read, for example, “BSL: 315 mm” (SportsSurge, Carv).
The critical point: BSL is not uniform across mondo sizes. Two boots marked the same mondo — even from the same manufacturer — can have different sole lengths. There is also a hard line between adult and junior norms: adult-norm bindings are not compatible with junior-norm boots, and while most junior-norm bindings will physically accept an adult-norm boot, that setup is rarely advisable (Jans). How forward pressure is set
On a rail-mounted binding, the toe and heel pieces slide along the track to a scale marked in sole-length millimeters. The scale position is only a guide. Why a certified tech does the final setup
Mounting the binding, setting forward pressure, adjusting AFD height, and selecting the release value (DIN) are not DIY jobs.
