Buying Skis and Bindings Separately — Brake Width, Mounting & Package Deals
Buy a flat ski and the binding is your call — and the one spec that makes or breaks the purchase is brake width. Here is how to match a binding brake to your ski's waist, read the three dimension numbers, pick a mount point, and tell when a system package saves you the choice entirely. What brake width means
Brake width is the distance between the two brake arms when they are in the down position, measured in millimeters. When the binding releases the boot in a fall, those arms swing down and dig into the snow to stop the ski sliding away; while you are clipped in, they fold up against the ski and stay out of the way (ptoski, evo).
The arms have to extend past the edges of the ski to deploy at all — if they cannot clear the edges, they cannot swing down and the ski keeps running. Most resorts require functioning brakes (ptoski).
The brake-width-to-waist matching rule
Match the brake width to the ski's waist width: the brake should be equal to or up to 15 mm wider than the waist, with the preferred sweet spot about 5–10 mm wider. Never choose a brake narrower than the waist (ptoski, evo, Corbetts, The Skier's Lounge, FREESKIER).
The reason a touch of extra width helps: the brake arms sit behind the heel piece, which is slightly rearward of the ski's true waist, so the ski is a few millimeters wider at the brake location than at the measured waist. A brake exactly equal to the waist is the bare minimum; a couple of extra millimeters of clearance lets the arms clear the sidewall reliably (ptoski, The Skier's Lounge).
When in doubt, err wide. Slightly too wide is consistently described as better than too narrow (ptoski, The Skier's Lounge).

Reading ski dimensions: tip / waist / tail
Ski dimensions are always three numbers — tip, waist, tail — and the waist is the middle number, measured underfoot at the mounting centerline. That waist number is the one you base the brake width on (Powder7, Peter Glenn, The Skier's Lounge).
For example, a ski stamped 125 / 80 / 115 is 80 mm underfoot, so you shop the 80–95 mm brake range. The geometry is normally printed on at least one ski or shown on the product page, and the waist is frequently baked right into the ski's name (Powder7, Peter Glenn). Note that the waist can shift a few millimeters with ski length on some brands, so confirm against the actual length you are buying (The Skier's Lounge).
Too narrow vs too wide
Too narrow is the dangerous failure. Brake arms narrower than the ski hit the sidewalls when they try to deploy, jam, and never drop — so when the ski releases it runs away down the hill, a hazard to everyone below you. A brake that barely clears can also catch intermittently and fail only when you actually need it (evo, FREESKIER, ptoski, The Skier's Lounge).
Too wide is the annoying failure. Arms that extend well past the edges can dig into the snow when you tip the ski on edge in a carved turn — a slight drag at low edge angles that becomes a real disruption at higher angles or on steeper terrain. Oversize arms can also hook snow pants or catch the other ski's brake in tight turns (evo, FREESKIER, The Skier's Lounge, ptoski).
Forums commonly suggest bending the brake arms out to gain clearance when the fit is close — and a slightly-too-close brake can sometimes be coaxed past the edges this way (r/skiing). Treat bending as a last resort, not standard practice: it weakens the arms and can leave them out of position (The Skier's Lounge). System vs flat skis
Before you shop a binding, confirm which kind of ski you are buying. A system ski comes packaged with integrated bindings on a unique mounting system that lets the ski and binding integrate and makes installation easier — if you bought a package, there is no remaining binding-selection decision because the bindings are already included. A flat ski has a flat topsheet with no bindings or system installed (flat refers to the topsheet, not a lack of camber or rocker); almost any binding will fit a flat ski, so selecting the right one is on you (Peter Glenn).
In short: system ski = the package decides the binding for you; flat ski = you buy and mount the binding separately, and that is exactly where brake-width matching, the mount point, and DIN all become your calls.
Where to mount your bindings
Use the manufacturer's recommended mount point unless you have a specific reason not to. Builders mark a recommended point — usually the center of the sidecut — based on where they believe the ski skis best, and that mark is the safe default (FREESKIER).
Mounting further forward, or at true center, shifts the balance of swing weight and favors switch riding, hitting rails, and spinning. It is a matter of personal preference — if you have not developed one, stick with the manufacturer mark (FREESKIER).
DIN range & certified mounting
Two binding specs gate the search: brake width (covered above) and DIN range. Your DIN setting must fall within the binding's DIN range — DIN is the release-force scale (from the German standards body), where a lower DIN means less force is required to release. The setting accounts for weight, height, ability level, and boot sole length (evo, Corbetts).
A certified ski technician should set both the forward pressure and the DIN when the bindings are mounted — ideally landing the DIN closer to the middle of the binding's range than at either end. Bindings should always be mounted and appropriately adjusted by a certified technician; this is not a DIY step (evo, Corbetts).
