It's the single most-quoted spec on the box, and the most misunderstood, because it isn't a universal standard. What the flex number means
The flex index is a manufacturer's relative stiffness rating — a number, usually between 50 and 140+, that measures how much resistance the boot gives when you lean forward into it. Lower numbers mean a softer, easier-to-bend boot; higher numbers mean a stiffer, more powerful boot (Wayfinder Boots, SkatePro).
What it is not is a universal standard. There is no governing body that defines what a “110” should feel like, and each manufacturer uses its own testing methods, so flex indexes function more as guidelines than precise specs (Jans, S'portofino). Flex by ability
Ability level is the single biggest driver of flex choice. Body weight matters
Flex is rated at the boot, but it's felt through your force. Body weight significantly changes how a given flex feels: a 140-pound skier and a 200-pound skier will have completely different experiences in the same 110-flex boot, because the heavier skier generates more force against the cuff (Wayfinder Boots). The failure modes point opposite directions. Men's vs women's flex
Brands typically label women's boots about 10 to 20 flex points softer than the same men's model at the same performance level, and the difference isn't just weight — women generally have lower calf-muscle volume and a different forward-lean preference, so the cuff is tuned softer to match (DIN calculator). Brand scale differences
This is the part that catches buyers: a 110 in one brand is not a 110 in another.
